Strawbery Banke Museum partners with Nate Piper, of Piper Boatworks of Rye, New Hampshire, to present The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke. Located on the grounds of the historic museum, The Boatshop demonstrates traditional wooden boat-building skills and associated crafts, enhancing the museum’s maritime features with maritime history-related exhibits and demonstrations, as well as workshops and programs focused on current maritime topics and skills.
Strawbery Banke Museum interprets the 300+ year history of the waterfront neighborhood of Puddle Dock in Portsmouth and the people whose lives were intertwined with the river, the boats that plied its waters, and the economies that were derived from it. The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke gives visitors the opportunity to connect with this region’s rich maritime history and will additionally provide resources that encourage today’s sailors, boaters and maritime enthusiasts to learn from and sustain that tradition.
Phase One of The Boatshop at Strawbery Banke project is expanding an existing building on the museum campus, adjacent to the Dinsmore Shop and traditional cooperage demonstration, to accommodate a new wooden boat-building workshop and demonstration space.
