Strawbery Banke Triples Goal of Rink Services Group Fund-raiser for Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond

Portsmouth, New Hampshire (January 16, 2018) – Proving that the Seacoast community does, in fact,  offer a “silver lining” in the cold, Strawbery Banke announced today that the “$5,000 Rink Services Group Challenge Match” raised more than $18,000 to help “keep Portsmouth skating” at Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond.

“The frigid air kept skaters away during the normally peak holiday vacation week, clouding the attendance numbers and revenues the museum relies on the keep the rink open,” said Lawrence J. Yerdon, president and CEO of Strawbery Banke. ”Gary Warriner, owner of Rink Services Group stepped forward with a generous $5,000 Weekend Challenge late last week, hoping the local community would pitch in with the generosity they’ve always shown in supporting  this valued community resource.”

With only four days to meet the deadline, another weather issue complicated the challenge: heavy rain and 60-degree temperatures forced a closure for a day and a half.

But then the temperatures dropped and the ‘silver lining’ appeared. Creative fund-raising in the form of publicity, a Facebook fund-raising initiative, online donations through the Strawbery Banke website, a $5,000 donation from Sally and Mark Stebbins and the Rink Services Group $5,000 match produced a total of $18,782 for the seasonal operation of Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond.

“Thank you to everyone who supported this effort,” said Yerdon. “The response exceeded our expectations, as donors and skaters poured in over the long weekend. Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond helps fulfill the museum’s mission by offering a winter place to gather.  Though tested, it’s clear that it’s a ‘sustainable resource for the community,’ as well.”

The Labrie Family Skate at Puddle Dock Pond is open seven days a week, from 9 am to 9 pm. For more information, including the weekly schedule, visit
