Volunteer Garden Clean Up Day at Strawbery Banke
Join an inspired community of gardeners and help bring new life to the Historic Gardens at Strawbery Banke Museum. Meet at the Tyco Visitor's Center for morning refreshments and work assignments. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Drawing
on the scholarship of the past two decades on ‘the history of the
book’, the course will explore the functions and meanings of
writing and reading in early America. Focusing on private writings, such as diaries, journals, and
letters, and on the experience of reading, we will examine questions
such as: What was the
importance of writing and reading for ordinary people in early
America? How much time
did people commit to these activities; when and under what
conditions; and what purposes did these activities fulfill for them?
This
Topics in American Studies course will explore these questions in a
weeklong Institute. Using the Strawbery Banke Museum (SBM) in Portsmouth, NH, as
text and site, we will engage in lectures, discussions, and walking
tours from a variety of experts in history, literature, and material
culture.

Strawbery Banke's 50th Anniversary Celebration!
Join
us as we celebrate our 50th Anniversary with a fun 50’s themed
party. This event will feature costumed role-players from the 1950s,
a hula hoop contest and other great games, live
demonstrations, activities in the Children’s Garden, a special 50s
theme to the activities offered in the Discovery Center, food, and
fun for all ages. Each of the exhibit houses will also display cakes
that are themed to historic cake recipes for the period of the
house. Admission for this very special event is just $1 (the

PIRATES OR PATRIOTS?: The Private Was of Capt. John Paul
Jones and Col. John Langdon
About the play: Behind the schoolbook saga of John Paul Jones and
his heroic raids against the British lies the more private drama
of the struggles between the “Father of the American Navy”,
and the man who built his ships, appointed his officers, and
caused him endless aggravation: Portsmouth merchant, local hero,
and future Governor of New Hampshire, John Langdon. PIRATES OR
PATRIOTS? brings that private drama to a public stage, and, in its
portrait of the clash between these two titanic figures of the
Revolutionary War era, also dramatizes the exquisite tension of
historical narrative itself: how the same facts and artifacts, in
the hands of two different interpreters, can yield two very
different perspectives. Was Jones an arrogant upstart or the
hapless victim of a Portsmouth prejudice against those from “away”?
Was Langdon an unprincipled capitalist interested only in
protecting his own trade, or a crafty New Hampshire patriot who
initially supported John Paul Jones and then, when he came to know
him, regretted the decision?
Free with museum admission. $5.00 per person if you only wish

Celebrate
the Opening of the East Coast Greenway in NH
Participate
in a family-friendly community walk or one of two coastal bike
rides, all of which will converge at Strawbery Banke Museum
grounds for the opening ceremony from noon to 12:30 p.m. Saturday,
Sept. 20. The walk will begin at 10 a.m. and follow a 1.5-mile
circuit around Portsmouth, ending back at the museum grounds at
noon. There will be two bicycle ride options. One will begin at
9:30 a.m. at Hampton Beach State Park and follow a 21.5-mile
stretch of the NHSG route along Route 1A and Route 1B. Riders will
stop at Wallis Sands State Park at 10 a.m. to pick-up additional
cyclists traveling a shorter leg from Rye to Portsmouth. The
events will culminate at Strawbery Banke for the ribbon-cutting

2008 Tour of Fairy Houses in Portsmouth Gardens
Sponsored by the Friends of the South
End, this self-guided walking tour features whimsical fairy houses
built by families, children, garden clubs and local artisans. This
year’s tour takes a literary turn with its theme of “Houses in
Fairy Tales and Literature.” Highlights include the “Artisans Showcase” at Sheafe
Warehouse and excerpts from “Fairy Houses – The Ballet” in
Prescott Park. The tour rambles through Strawbery Banke Museum,
the Governor John Langdon House, Wentworth-Gardner & Tobias
Lear Houses, and Prescott Park. Visitors are invited to build an
entire Fairy House Village on Peirce Island using only natural
materials.
Tickets are on sale at Strawbery Banke Tyco Visitors Center and
include admission to all the historic sites on the route. Advance
prices are: children $4.00; adults $10; seniors $8.00. Day of tour
prices are: children $5.00; adults $15.00; seniors $10.00.
Free parking is available on Peirce Island.

in Granite
Join The
Banks Gallery as it hosts a lecture on the influence of the White
Mountain School on contemporary painters. The lecture will be
presented by New Hampshire artist Stapleton Kearns in conjunction
with The Banks Gallery's exhibition titled Visions in Granite. The
lecture will be held in the Tyco Visitors Center, at Strawbery
Banke Museum, Portsmouth, followed by a reception at The Banks
Gallery's new exhibition. The lecture and reception will be free
of charge and open to the public.
Stapleton has painted on location in New England for over 30
years, he has lived in Massachusetts, Maine and now in New

Celebrate
harvest time with Strawbery Banke’s first annual Fall Harvest
Festival. Experience a
traditional New England country fair complete with demonstrations
from craftspeople, heritage breed and farm animal exhibits, sheep
dog demonstrations, special autumn
activities in the Children’s Garden, oxen team demonstrations, presentations on heirloom
seeds, rug hooking, quilting, basket making, flax spinning,
canning and food preservation talks, fiber arts, hand shearing of
sheep, treadle lathe demonstration, coopering, harvest-themed
crafts in the Family Discovery Center, garden tours, flower
arranging presentations, performances from the Seacoast Wind
Ensemble and Commonwealth Vintage Dancers, and much more! Fun for

homes will be in bloom and decorated with period harvest displays.

Ghosts on the Banke
Come and meet the Ghosts on the Banke at Strawbery Banke’s famous Halloween celebration. Long-dead sea captains, 17th century shopkeepers and wayward pirates haunt the streets
